Kilian Martin: A Skate Regeneration

Skateboarding sure has come a long way since I started back in 1998. Back in the day if someone could do a 360 flip, they were hot shit. Now to go pro, you pretty much have to be the most fearless and stylish dude on the block. It's become a serious big business with companies like MTV having two or more shows about skateboarders as well as multi-million dollar events being held in their honor. With the commercialization of the sport broadening daily, it's sometimes hard to imagine where the true essence of the sport really comes from.

Fortunate for us, dudes like these are pushing the sport in a different direction. These guys have been able to think outside of the box of just going bigger, harder and faster and transpose the sport into an art-form, a true medium of expression. This isn't only true for the skaters themselves. Video directors have also played a pivotal role in this paradigm shift. Directors like the infamous Spike Jonze who started his career with Blind's 'Video Days' and the Beastie Boys 'Sabotage' video and then progressed to the legendary videos 'Yeah Right!' and 'Fully Flared'. He was the first to really integrate a truly interesting and immersible audio visual experience as demonstrated in 'Yeah Right'. But enough of the chit-chat, check out these videos and enjoy what some creative minds have brought to the sport.
